KIM VAN ANTWERP

Color + texture + luxury. It must be velvet!

What a treat it has been working with the new metallic and glitter felts, and the diaphanous metallic thread papers! They work wonderfully in the bauble kits, and there are more to come.

While I’m going out of town this weekend (Oct 9-11) and won’t be able to make a new kit, I’ve taken these few spare days to start working on some new materials to put in them.

This is double-faced velvet ribbon, made in Japan, and it is one of the most luxurious materials I have worked with. It’s softer, with more drape than regular single-faced velvet ribbon. Two inches wide! The intensity of color I was able to achieve is way beyond my expectations. The photo hardly does it justice.

You may have guessed that by ‘luxurious’, one of the things I mean is ‘expensive’, and you’d be right. I think though that it drives creativity to be forced to maximize the impact of such a special material so that we can all enjoy using it without feeling guilty or terrified to touch it. It’s a natural for holiday/winter decorations, and you can look for it to be included in upcoming kits.

I made this tassel for my friend Julie. It only took an 8 inch length of this velvet to really animate the composition!

That said, if you want some velvet ribbon in quantity, send me an email!
